On a moonless night
on a dare, on a bet
a friend and I
stoned and set,
Parked my Jeep
a blanket, a J
walked the block
with little to say,
Went through the gate
the arch and the hours
simple stones
and granite towers,
Found our spot
slipped out of our clothes
and from the grave
possibilities rose,
We both took a puff
we looked at the stars
our friends back dancing
in crowded bars,
As the dead watched
we did, oh you know
long-dead viewers
enjoyed the show,
After the act
we smoked one more
then made love again
our secret dance floor,
Pulled on our jeans
our underwear, nada
back under the arch
it’s something you gotta …
… do before
you’re dead, buried there
with no one to run
their hands through your hair,
No one to do
on those long moonless nights
looking down on the Earth
from stone-headed heights,
