its vestiges floating through our atmosphere
like heat lightning in past summers
of their lyre the plectrum may stir the strings
vernal lakes, shallow and handsome
evanescent fair and floating free
they are silent, and wait for our return
on our fabled shores none ever reach
shipwrecked mariners see no footprints
earth is inhabited, but where are they?
everyday of their lives
being unable to transcend immovable laws
of the other hand, humane and practical,
you reach the sunset and are no nearer the sun
carrying to the uttermost parts of the earth
once more rowing upward through the noon
croaking on your way alone
knowing the divisions of days and nights
intervening spaces create shades and lights
not affecting the general illumination
but the modes and degrees of seeing vary
of the lofty strain down the tide of years
you may yet get a view and stand your ground
again and again the dialogue continues
scholars betray the narrowness of
survival of those youthful dreams
