Your look says to me 'I am your companion and true'
But still I remember that voice, so far from yours
That could do things so far from yours
That could lift my head when the atmosphere closed in
So quick that it never did close in

No sky too grey just soar with the eagles
No moorland too bleak just run with the deer
No lake too empty when you sup with the mermaids
And the town smoke that might smother is alive
Alive with the culture of ancients

And though the day comes when it all starts to close in
Still that voice calls me away
Now the sky is grey, yes
Now the smoke smothers, yes
But look away fast
Look to the flesh
Attach yourself to the most elegant ideals
Learn the satisfactions of electronic wealth
But above all else look to the flesh

Now the voice has gone
And I scour a moorland bleak and sodden
Choking as I wonder what calamity occasioned the silence
It's you that calls off the search, my companion
Leads me away, though you're not there to see
For flesh is forgotten or a fallacy
My companion and true?
Truth is dulled promise
Dulled conviction
Dulled longing
Yes, you're my companion and true
