A day like any other
Cold gray unless I squint
Lonely
Full of regret
Broken promises from new and old
And sleep
Always dead repose
Hibernation
Hoping that tomorrow might bring
Could magically supply
The cure
In solid form
Elixir of happiness
Breakfast of manna
Often strewn away like valueless seed
To shrivel and die
Or worse await in shadow
To pounce upon Me
From dark despair
Each anniversary

Life continues
I have not given up quite yet
Pulled the stakes from quicksand
And let the canvas fall in final submission
Temptation hovers
Held on gossamer wings
Inches from My grasp
Like imaginary treasure
Always just a reach away
A long stretch
That racks the joints
To make Me wince and moan

Some years the sun shines
Daffodils and crocus peeping
Heralding some gentler form
Seasons of soft hazy emotion
It never comes
Cannot deliver its promised schedule
The groundhog always smiles
And tips his topper knowingly
Laughing at human needs
To believe that nature cares
For anything but the long haul
Replenishing cellular matter

A sapling bends in the wind
Fighting for survival
New life clutching
Digging roots into sandy soil
Two years and just started
A journey to the skies canopy
Rising from leaf mold
To stand erect and proud

I mark each year carefully
Comparing where he stands
Watching the miniscule progress
Protecting as I can
From careless foraging critter
Or human devastation
With axe and hoe
Wielded for esthetics

I will witness what I can
Perhaps see a fork or two
Before I join the crumble
Caked around his feet
Necessarily unfulfilled
A stepping stone to futures
Shaded from heat
Protected from rain
Cared for
Nurtured
