Natural Law

Why do we "fall" in love,
as if it was gravity
that drops us to the ground

like an overripe pear? Are we
as species so ineffective
at resisting the tidal pull

we know as sex? How misnamed,
then, sapiens when a glance,
a wink, arcs us toward the earth

like an idly thrown stone.
But if I must be so dull, I will clatter
along life's road the most ordinary

rock in Christendom, yearning
only for the pleasure of each kick
of your squared, attractive toe.
