Nearly Enough

If I could say “I love you” one more time
Just because I do,
I would.
I would say “I’m sorry” and I would mean it.
Hugs and kisses would come more often
And I wouldn’t hesitate to hold your hand,
Even in front of my friends.

There’s nothing worse than losing someone dear.
Except when you didn’t say “I love you”
Nearly as much as you could have.

Years have passed since I last spoke these words to him.
And now we’re both unable to express
What we both knew,
But didn’t say
Nearly enough.
