Night

And so to bed – how long ago it seems
That sleep came after seizing up my day
And planning next day’s joys, to slide away
On half unanswered questions turned to dreams –
How to entice your smile, which words to say
And things I wondered at would whirl around
Within my shelter, lying snug and sound,
Convinced that life is pleasant, come what may.

Snug safety’s long lost its every ground.
Though time goes on, tomorrow won’t be new
And my surroundings only fill with dread;
Now life’s secluded, obligation-bound,
There’s nothing much I can look forward to –
To end the day I find a troubled bed.
