Night Thoughts

What do you think about late at night
As you lie quietly in your comfortable bed?
Do you drift on fluffy clouds toward slumber,
Or do the ghosts of what might have been appear?
Do your thoughts wander easily
To the one sleeping silently beside you?
Or are they cold, restless thoughts
That tease and tempt and torture?
Do you smile silently and snuggle closer,
Eager to feel the reassuring warmth?
Or do you silently measure the distance
And add bricks to the wall that’s built between?
Do you feel the sweet, familiar dampness
Left over from glorious lovemaking?
Or do the velvet fantasies of first loves,
Lost loves, stir arousal in the dark?
Does your soul float effortlessly onward,
Swept easily along by the currents of your life?
Or does your heart beat restlessly, mockingly,
A throbbing warning that life is not a dress rehearsal?
Do you fear this sweet contentment
Is but a haven from despair?
Or is the restless longing a reminder
To seize your fate and get it right?
