It is no one's fault,
I suppose,
when both are cracked
so it goes....

It began with such beauty,
such sweet perfect rapture;
so much more than a
quatrain or two might capture.

So many beautiful
words had been spoken,
and only a third of them
were promises broken.

And of course all of the promises
would turn into lies.
When you break one to start with
you can't be surpised.

When will you leave?
How long must I wait?
"Soon, Lover, soon."
(Then promise a date.)

Again and again, such
tender naivete;
years were allowed
to slip by this way.

Remember, it's as natural
as thermodynamic law
ending with less:
hearts broken, nerves raw.

Ah, but what there was,
was real enough.
And what do you ever have
to show for Love?

It's a day to remember,
the 31st of September.
