I am homeless
so homeless:
there is no city
no neighborhood on this earth
no familiar faces anywhere
that say to my soul:
"this is home"

And I am hungry
so hungry!,
in my own house
full of good food,
I am starving
for sustenance I've not had in years:
opportunity and success,
reputation and security

And I am alone
so alone,
though there are people I care for
who care for me,
who even now and then
do me special honors

Even so, I am alone
forlorn
wandering a vast blue desert
guilty
not right in my mind
passing the bones of men and camels

wandering
through day and night
(awake and asleep)
endlessly
hearing the soul-sick, lonely saxaphone song
of a street musician I can't see
