You cannot know a man simply by the shadow that he casts. No, it’s the substance that’s in question. All those atoms and molecules bouncing off one another. We were all stars once, every piece. Now we are but ashes awaiting a scattering wind. And he waits for us, everywhere we turn. He has one hand on the wheel of every drunk who thinks he’s not too drunk and waits patiently within a simple can of peaches, too long upon the shelf. We are his and he is ours and because of this we must never feel alone for our eternal lover is just beyond our shoulder, whispering of peace and pieces and the songs of lion‘s kings. Dreams are the only refuge but even this is only for the wise, those who know the wisdom of the cookie is in the eating, not the reading. Soon even they will cease to be, and in that they will become all things, from worm to bird to grass to man again. But not the stars, for we can never return home again. Banishment is the sentence for all life and a just one at that, for in the end the shadow often seems more real than that which casts it.
