i stare blankly at the rain
incubus singing me to tears
your letter clenched in my hand…

so far away
and yet you’re here
your eyes searching mine
for the reasons i cannot offer you
before you shake your head
and turn away…

i open my hand
to reveal the lock that binds me
and it all comes flooding back to me

my betrayal hangs heavy in my heart
and i cannot explain to you
what made me do it
or why i lied…

all i can tell you now
is that i love you
and that i’m sorry
and all i can do
is offer you my key…

i didn’t expect you to take it
my eyes lowered
i waited for the door to slam behind you

and instead, i felt your hand brush mine
and the key, lifted from my palm

i glanced into your eyes
and saw the hurt, the pain
and ultimately, the love
and i knew
that i was still yours

and i vowed
then and now

i would and will
never hurt you again
because
i love you too
