I am dazed...
phone clatters to the floor
receiver squeaking with concern

ignoring the distant voices
I contemplate the flowers

they seem pale
wan
diseased

backed by crumbling wallpaper
duller still in my mind

the world is at half mast
as blood struggles to reach my brain

thoughts try to squeeze through
a quickly shrinking door

please let some of them free
please...let her live

then the sharp jaws menace
taking a toe, a foot, a leg
until I am just a crumb, dust, an asterisk

a reminder of myself
a shadow without a body

nothing

absolutely nothing

without her

You take the reader into the moment and make them live it with you. For myself,it brought back with vivid clarity, the instant I learned my mother had cancer. It seems strange to compliment someone on such a intensely personal moment..but of your writing of it..amazing. Intense. Heartbreakingly evocative. Thank you for sharing.

First, I'm very sorry about your sister.

Some poems driven by this kind of emotion are lacking, as far as being poetic goes. But this very well written and powerful. One of your best.
