LEMONIA (F)LEAP EDELTRAUD => UNTITLED CHAPTER (AS YET)

IERAPETRA "NAPOLEON"
SATURDAY AFTERNOON
20/9/2014

ON THE DEATH OF A TELEPHONE BOX

There you used to hung,
from that wall.
At first you were a revelation
in the impressionable mind of a tourist,
then you became functional
and later dysfunctional,
at length,
a place of torture.

I knew you in your later stages,
I wrote your history,
I followed you to your execution,
but I did not watch the decapitation.

They gutted you, my friend,
and you deserved it.
You were so useless,
for calling or for trying,
useful only
for not getting through
(usually the later),
anyhow,
an empty wall stands there
and no one will know
anymore of you.

The winds used to blow cold,
the rain used to drive merciless,
the summer sun ferocious
was a no go always,
you were exposed to all of these,
not a soul could take cover,
and what for?
How could one take cover
from defeats already confirmed?
Every effort towards that
was a new and stronger confirmation.

Gradually I stopped
taking pictures
of everything around me,
but I'll take one more
of your absence
(in your absence, that is).

god bye, box,
I know you won't come back,
we live in an age
of cheap mobile telephony,
you are obsolete,
maybe a few
poor unskilled emigrants
still miss you,
but that's tough luck,
you won't come back,
good bye, box.
