You caught me crying on my porch
(waves pounded the Pacific coast,
new cars were stamped out in Detroit,
tourists got drunk on Bourbon street,
snow fell on the Rockies' high slopes).

We smoked a joint and I cried more
(models strutted down Milan runways,
sheikhs swam with naked girls off Nice,
cranes skirted the Gobi desert,
flamingos flew past Kenyan lakes).

I settled into your arms and
let my sadness blend with the night.
I gave no thought to your struggles,
no thought of the pain you must feel
(icy comets whirled past Saturn,
poor children begged in Mexico,
the sun rose fire-red this morning,
lovers' hearts were quietly broken).
