The road lies wide and empty as you make
your way back home. There is the engine's hum;
not to be lulled to sleep by it you take
a nice CD and plug it in and drum
a counter-rhythm on the wheel to drown
the drive's monotony. Against the girl's
pure voice there's sparkling guitar runs to crown
the lilting tune in gallops, spurts and whirls.
Dull asphalt stretches far into grey May
and from the sky grey rain obscures your view;
the lovely music finds a helpless prey
as its deep longing wrings your heart for you:
ahead there's one more year as cold and grey
as this grey road that rolls your life away.
