Opening Acts

A crow pilfers through rubbish
dumped at the back of a local
auto parts store. The Noisettes,
a band opening for Bloc Party

at the Palms, caterwaul
in front of a crowd of stand-ins
for previous generations,
their bodies calculating tonight's

hidden costs in the spotlights.
I hold my girlfriend close
and ignore my shadow veering
towards a grey haired man sitting

in the wings,anxiously checking
his watch.
