so we begin.

1. e4 e5

pawns rush forward,
pushing against your body
guard of knights and bishops,
moving along the diagonal path
upon which we once
strayed,
though straight:

Castle!
Castle!

flirting, teasing,
exposing
and then taking away!

your weaknesses are tactical,
i play aggressively.

i want to scatter you and press against
your remaining pieces,
squeezing mine into open spaces,
flooding you with―

sometimes i cannot think ahead,
one move,
three.

Gambit!
Countergambit!

have i attacked too early,
ever the hothead?

the middlegame of tight maneuvers
breathless moves and
anticipation

who will succumb to whom?

now:

under the table,
your legs spread and wet
my appetite as i slide my rook
down the long and unguarded horizontal
slit you've left open and appealing and vulnerable.

and yet,
i never win.

i lose!

for each game ends,
with my:

d e f e a t e d;

d e f l a t e d;

King.

Queen triumphant.

must study your openings,
must play again.
