Last nights storm
has left the air breathless with musk.
I empty the rain water from the wheel barrow
and wander aimlessly
about the garden.

Things are neglected since she left;
a bracket has rusted and given way
and a planter lies smashed on the walkway.
The bougainvillea is leggy and must be trimmed;
I haven't the strength.

The bird house is empty and ignored,
and the squirrels disdain
the corn I have left them

I close my eyes
and think of chocolate strawberries;
the velvet sweetness against my palate,
the soft give against my teeth,
and the juices bursting against my tongue.
