as he fixed their costumes
and her husband agreed
everyone looked away
“you can leave, my love”
in a moment of silent violence
backstage just a little later on
“but you take nothing with you”
and that was that was that
man and wife, happy family
and finally the lonely minister
all bow to the congregation
of this Christmass pageant
