She strings each lustrous white lie
on a strand of delicate desperation
and clasps it about her neck
counts each glowing pearl
draped across her pale breast
as a hoodoo fetish,
a well thumbed rosary,
praying to any and all
who will look,
who will listen
for a miracle,
or redemption,
or if nothing else,
a moment's affection
