We've been bound to this trajectory
since we locked eyes -
this curve rising

then falling
straight back to earth
And here we are
at impact

One more drink
one more slow dance,
one more thin strand of time
caught
and stuffed
into our greedy hearts

all these vain efforts at closeness

And I'm in pieces after,
shattered every time
you look away
walk away

sing some dusty tune
about some other girl
somewhere else

And I wish they were all for me
that your heart ached
when you lay alone at night

and that songs were just a way for
your fingers
and your mouth
somehow,
to play me

And those strings
and those words,
those pauses
reach deeper
and travel wider
through me
than anybody's dared.
