They said you ate a baby;

not a trustworthy source,
just one of those neighborhood legends
that everyone knows.

At first, I'll admit--
the green seemed a bit flamboyant,
but, people rarely call something by such adjectives
if it has serrated arms.

I'd like to see if you really get that big,
in those backwater terrariums
by the swamplands.

Who do you pray to?
Does the mantis have a savoir?
Perhaps a smaller, greener Jesus,
or Mary’s visage, found in a spot on a dying leaf.

I want to give this poem an award of some sort. Maybe a light green P for poetry on a golden base that's in the shape of a dead poet who died after being in a long catatonic state from reading bad poetry, then he came across your marvelous poem and the joy of it all killed him. Anyway, cool, clever, witty poem and that first line is a real grabber.
