I lie in bed as shadows loom.
What a cute boy. What a handsome young man.
So full of potential, that one.

You stir next to me. Soft and distant.
What an adorable girl. What a striking young woman.
The desire of every man.

Do you love me? Yes.
Do you want me? Yes.

Tonight…no
Tonight…no
Tonight…no

And you sleep, and I wither.
My eyes close, but sleep won't come.
Sadness my familiar friend.

We love them both.
What an adorable baby. What a devilish smile.
Such a curious tot. So determined, that one.

Parties and pictures.
Trips and tribulations.
Games and grandparents.

What an athlete. What a student.
Look at those eyes. Another fine report.

Pressure and commitment.
Bills and baseball.
Summer swimming, winter fires.

The reflection I see is older.
Where did that young man go?
The eyes still bright green.
Yet darkened by lonely nights of resignation.

Do you love me still? Yes.
Do you need me still? Yes.

Tonight…no
Tonight…no
Tonight…no

A man of honor despite.
Corroded by frustration.
Dissolving into sameness.
Weeping in his soul.

Will the road never end?
