All the warm summer
the day's slow decay
was hardly noticed -
pushed away - not seen

on purpose, maybe, though
I can't remeber. No
clear picture stays of how
the issues lost

their flexibility and
we were all amazed
to find the sun declining.
After dark, deception was

kept up with smoke and wine
and there were candles and
their light was in my eyes
and it took long before

all vigour slipped
into slow memories:
'It's so long ago that I
still hoped -' but

what exactly, or
just why, remains
unspoken. Even in
old age some things

are energetically
private; some things
have always been far
too painful to share.
