Do you remember me?
I wrote you a poem of lifelong devotion
promised you dawn whispered kisses
we walked connected through small towns
imagined breakfast in foreign windows
painted a future in smoke and dreams
and you promised you'd wait
I loved you for waiting
I loved you for understanding my secrets
my pretty lady, I loved you best
Do you remember me?
Do I remember you?
your voice
igniting the flare of surrender in every cell
your trembling fingers
tracing lazy memories on familiar flesh
your eyes blue with sadness
love and remorse deep as the sun
so many years
so many clandestine couplings
second class affair in first rate hotels
then we drifted, followed other tracks
boarded other trains
banished the clouds from the lonely skies
severed the cords of aspiration
but, strong connections are never broken
no matter how tenuous they may seem
like a bungee cord
the intensity of feeling gets stretched
until it is out of sight
and barely perceptible...
in a stroke it catapaults back
sudden impact on wounds still raw and bleeding hope
leaving us sprawled and helpless on the floor
wondering what hit us...
yes...
I remember you...
