My broken chair fell forward
and my ear leaned in to hear
the little, gray speaker
sing to me about confessions
I made several nights
while he was listening closely.

He sent me warning:
"The lines most repeated -
listen to them closely.
Those things you say,
I love the most,
and keep me spellbound
with every passing day,"

Sarcastic vocals,
insincerity exaggerated,
and every private thought
now given up to song.

When the last note played,
I put up my foot and pushed
the broken chair into recline
and I tried to be logical.

Thoughts overlap one and another,
and I start to convince myself
this simply cannot be real.
I start to rise from the seat,
but submit to an urge to be sure
I hadn't misheard it.
Now with finger on the button,
feel the gentle click
as I hit play once more.
