*************************************
I knew it was dying
blood gushing from the mouth
legs quivering
I couldn't look
Yet I had to look
staying with my shepherd to the end
Giving death the dignity it deserved
as the wheel of life slowly wound down
Rubbing neck lightly
Whispering comforts
Massaging pleasure spots
Sobbing as the movie progressed
reels slowing to a crawl
the legs halting, then silent
the eyes glazed, then closing
And then
the stillness
the absolute stillness
my shepherd was gone
After an eternity
I could see a boy
a young boy
his face contorted in agony
He's dead my little one
and I can't make him whole
please forgive me
Suddenly at that moment
I knew all the money in the world
couldn't buy him happiness
couldn't take away the pain
and that the true meaning
of humdrum existence
is the simple love
of a boy
for his dog
(dedicated to "Tracker" 1999-2005)
Strangely enough, this poem seems so right. It's often said jokingly, "If you ever need a friend buy a dog." But behind all the funny comments ~ A dog is a wonderful affectionate companion. Well Written!
...and very worthy of the memorial. Simple loves remind us that live is worth living, and this poem also reminds us that it is fragile and to be cherished.
but it brings back sad memories. I think every dog I ever had, or ever got at all close to when I was a kid, died from being run over.
Sad but nicely done. I liked the somewhat disjointed form of the poem, it got across the grief and guilt marvelously.
