I raped my wife on our wedding night
We were best friends
yet hardly knew each other
In an attic of an old hotel by a river
The honeymoon suite
Became a living hell
Needful to consummate
No patience to wait
Propelled by champagne and cocaine
I begged and urged her compliance
Oblivious to her pain and pleadings,
reflecting fear of the commitment she’d made
To one she knew so little
A whirlwind romance transported us here
To this land of Oz
Enticed into this insane union
By fairytale needs,
Desires and hopes
Seeking Emerald City
Resistance worn away
Relentlessly assaulted
Pleadings ignored
Too tired to say no
Or escape to safer haven
(Where could she go?)
She yielded her body to my
Drug crazed obsession
There was no post coital bliss
Love had waited outside the room
We rose in a stupor, off balance
Like two shell shocked survivors
After an artillery strike
Comradship only through suffering and confusion
We dressed, ate, left early
Fled purgatory
Somber, sullen, silent escape
Together, alone
hearts betrayed, voiceless
Through our own naivete
Knowing this would be our worst day
