The pain ebbs
and flows with each
breath, a moist tide
reminding – the before
sudden as waves
crashed in screams
white froth hissing
the IV pump.
Yet now the quiet
silent but for a hush lapping
gentle, slow but always
a sea, the pain.

A strong poem significantly strengthened by removing "the pain" from the end, as they are understood.
