Click hereShe heard the crash, she heard the scream
She hoped and prayed this was a dream
She sat up straight and strained her ear
She felt her body shake with fear
She knew the old familiar sound
She knew there was no help around
She had no choice but rise and go
She climbed the stairs to face her foe
She saw the man whose face was red
She knew the boy wished he was dead
She felt the blow of his first whip
She felt it sting and cut his lip
She begged, she pleaded, then she prayed
She wished she wasn’t so afraid
She tried to talk and to distract
She made a joke, to make him laugh
She knew he didn’t see her there
She knew he didn’t even care
She saw her brothers pleading eyes
She whispered him to hide his cries
She knew the man was lost in rage
She knew he wouldn’t turn the page
She acted fast and traded him
She gave herself to curb his whim
She knew the man would make the trade
She knew the plan he often made
She felt it was her only way
She gave her brother one more day
She took the rest with head held high
She knew, deep down she wouldn’t die
She told herself that this would end
She held her bear, her only friend
She closed her eyes, she went away
She didn’t think of yesterday
She looked in front and saw ahead
She saw the hope and not the dread
She cleaned and bathed herself and then
She went back to her darkened den
She got down on one bended knee
She asked her God to set them free
She knew not when the time would come
She hoped that it would soon be done
She climbed in bed and smelled his ear
She knew that bear would calm her fear
She felt his warm and fuzzy fur
She felt him snuggle into her
She closed her eyes and drifted on
She was safe now, at least til dawn
She was, you see just barely four
She knew not what she had in store
She thought that help would soon arrive
She thought her family would survive
She could not know what she now sees
She hears their whispers, hears their pleas
She tries to drown out all the past
She tries but drowning never lasts
She carries on the best she can
She loves them all, she loves the man
She knows forgiveness heals the heart
She knows it gives a brand new start
She says, “What was, it cannot change”
She knows the past won’t rearrange
She is but one of many parts
She holds them all within her heart
She does her all to save the rest
She offers hope, she does her best

with the sing song tempo. That is how we preserver isn't it? Marching along and keeping the tempo. I do have one suggestion that might make it a little quicker. In this line:
She knew the boy wished he was dead
If you change he was to him it flows a little quicker.... unless the brother wasn't wishing the father dead but himself dead instead. Well you might think about changing it to him or himself depending on which him he wished dead.
but very moving. It's hard to write well on such a difficult subject, but you've found a way. Recommended in the New Poems thread in the Poetry Feedback and Discussion forum.
