We fall asleep,
me behind her.

No need for covers,
our body heat keeping each other warm.

I drift asleep to the sound of her breathing,
accented by the rhythm of her heartbeat.

I awake several hours later with a start.

"Where am I?" I ask myself, my heart racing.

My eyes adjust,
the moonlight coming through the window
illuminates the figure before me.

She is now facing me.

My heart slows to a more normal pace as I remember.

I'm at her house, in her bed.

I slowly reach over and push the stray strands of hair behind her ear.

She is so beautiful.

I lay there, watching her sleep.

As if sensing me, she moves toward me,
into my arm.

I hold her head to my chest and breath easier.

I start to drift off to sleep again, comforted by the warm body I hold to me.

"I will protect you," I whisper, "from all the evil things that go 'bump' in the night."
