…or rather about to, drifting off, eyes heavy,
I lie on my left side, comforted by your arm,
By the swell of your breasts against my back,
By your body-warmth gentle on my behind,
By your breathing which stirs my hair a little,
By the tracing of your fingertips on my curls,
As my own body rises and falls with breath.
Safe, protected, loved, held the night through
As never before – cancel all my memories,
For this is the true experience; cancel yours,
For we were made for this fitting together.

A short while ago we were in love-making,
Almost as though locked in earnest struggle,
You fucked me wonderfully, held me captive,
Melted me in heady sweat, made me cry out,
Made me look into your eyes and admit it,
That you are my one true love – you are!
Life was centred, focussed on you just then,
And on the tidal-bore sensation ripping me,
The moment you held back, then let me flow
Burst my aching banks and flood over you
In the turmoil of sex, and love, and total joy.

Now peace overcomes, and strange images
Begin to dance in my exhausted mind’s eye;
I hear half-sounds, see half-shapes, and know
That I am falling into the millpond of sleeping.
But still I am aware of you, your gentle presence
Protecting me from nightmare, from the chill
Of intrusive night-time breezes, house-noises.
You are my blanket and my pillow, my love,
You are my whole bed, and my only resting.
And although my mind now joins the whirling
Dance of faerie dreams, I lie with you alone.
