I love tapping down the tobacco in a new pack of cigarettes
grabbing the little plastic ear on the wrapper and unraveling the top
opening the little cardboard clamshell and pulling out the foil
urging out one lonely cigarette
it's long white form assuring me that it will give me what I need
I place the filter between my quivering lips
and snap my lighter
the flame licks the little brown end and the tobacco flares to life
it smolders and burns in the fire....
Release...
I draw the smoke deep into me...into my lungs
I hold it for the briefest of seconds then release it to the wind, to be free
the nicotine does its dance inside my head and my joints go limp
I am ... at peace
