                                                     Snowfall

                                                       1/7/11

The promise and threat of snow lies heavy in the air
As it mingles with the smoke from blackened chimneys
From the homes that cling together in the valley.

The fitful sun tries to shine...devoid of warmth
As storm clouds gather on the mountain top
Silent, like wraiths, they circle and dance around the peak

Singular snow flakes fall, innocent in their numbers
Now they multiply, and band together in white defiance
They cover the ground, draining out the colors of life

Wind, the narrator of the storm, shouts the warning to all that hear
The voice rising and falling in time to the falling snow
The snow drifts... shift and mount, like sands in the desert.

In the valley the houses wrap themselves in the cloak of white
Candle lights in the windows reflect off frost in the panes
The wind shakes rattles the doors, winter is seeking its way in.
