Solstice

bychampagne1982©

The coyote trickster bounds over the plain,
He revels in the beauty of Aurora's refrain,
What song does she sing as her jewels shine,
In Moon's reflection off the icy grain?

Coyote has stolen Sun's light so fine,
And left us here in the dark to whine.
Earth Mother strives to bring Her children light,
She pleads in the dark to see Dawn's bright line.

Aurora, the daughter, braves Trickster's night,
He's stolen the bauble from the day so bright,
Aurora knows that Day's in a room,
In a cave so deep Dawn passes from sight.

Deep into the cold and down into gloom,
Aurora descends by the light of her groom,
Through the cold night, sounds Coyote's bay,
If the Light fails it signals Man's doom.

Aurora calls for Moon to shine bright as Day,
She needs her lover to show her the way,
Glowing tapers of night's light she sends into the dark,
She returns shining Sun to Dawn's morning play.

With light comes the song of a winter lark,
The frost sparkles on trees in Coyote's park,
Man knows each year Trickster will try to obtain,
The Jewel of Hope that banishes Dark.
