an unreasonable silence drops
with finality like the last curtain
lowering onto a near empty stage…
and now you are all alone
(even though she sits over there
on the other side of the room)
and we are acting out our parts
in this long-running tragedy.
and the only thing that moves
is the shadow of the pendulum
that sweeps across the plane
back and forth and back
like a palindromic metronome
as the invisible audience
holds its collective breath…
