A long night's walk,
too vapid for solutions,
winds up at the river,
long before dawn -
time's signature tune -

chirps its way into
my consciousness;
long before the sun
warms my decisions;
but just in time

to feel river-moistness
caress my spine and settle
between my shoulder blades
and invade the nape of my neck,
making my hair stand on end;

when colourful morning,
grey through the strands
of dispiriting mists,
offers its bleak comment
and sends me home.
