in blue flickers of remembrance
gamble on someone else's
untested bravery.
Vicarious misplaced
pridemongers wave freedom,
but someone else blooms
deadly in bloody remove
from the recliner.
War is safe shielded
by cigar smoke. The mist
of a cold one makes it
vaporous.
On the History Channel
even GI Joe can storm Normandy,
lose a leg, and charge renewed
to the next rerun.
No sand-gritty boots.
No sweltering fear.
No shots in chaotic carnivals
deconstructing to confusion
and tear-stained orphans,
who know nothing of nations
or resources caught unfurled,
star spangled.
A Star! - No, FIVE of Them
I thought I was going to claim that the first stanza was the best,
then I read the rest.
War is an old man's game,
but not to those who serve.
I must agree with neonurotic,
the lack of personal remembrance is what makes it easy for the old men to gamble.
with both Maria and WE... Maria's comment war being a hard subject and the stanza WE quoted--but ;) IMHO (H being humble) I think the first stanza trips a little. Maybe the word rememberance? Or bravery? Or maybe it's my Cajun accent when I read this piece aloud. --any way, VERY nice work Ange.
This part is excellent:
War is safe shielded
by cigar smoke. The mist
of a cold one makes it
vaporous.
to write about and not be worried about backlash, this poem is well thought out, and strong voice for why war is wrong. I agree with many parts, its well written and as always very strong, good job angeline and very brave of you :)
