Star

Why do we follow stars?
The lights in the night sky
Sure they sparkle
Sure they twinkle
Sometimes they wink
Centuries have passed
Since we learned to use them
Since we followed them
Plotted courses to them
We track them
We try to predict our futures
Our behaviors
We have signs and sigils
We have named them
Prayed to them
I spent many a night
Staring up at them
They were my friends
They were the only light
I saw for many years
And now
I have found some new
Stars to keep me company
Stars not in the sky
Stars that are on skin
Draped around a neck
Those stars are my friends
