He pretended to be straightforward
with self-assured smiles
and well-mannered ways
he crept into my life
with quiet understanding
and loyal acceptance
he touched me
with gentle strokes
and caressing care
and I, none the wiser, let him in
with caution thrown to wind
while opening my mouth to please
and getting down on my knees
he left me
with turmoil and regret
for a boy who wore a girl’s bonnet
