My ancestors make up a motley band:
from Hugenots that made their cautious way
up north to settle in some thrifty clay
to old Ahasverus in some cold land,
they formed part of that ever-changing horde
that travels forth by safety's decrees,
and though quite different, all were refugees
that didn't travel of their own accord.
The worst of many worlds they left for me:
I am a heathen Christian, goyish Jew,
a Saxon farmer an a sceptic, too,
and everything combines to make me be
a born outsider, following the match
behind the sidelines from the strangers' patch.
