Your roommate was
drunk and dreaming
on the top bunk
which emboldened us.
Lying in a puddle of blue light
spilled from haphazardly-strung Christmas lights,
we explored each other
like non-native speakers of
an ancient language.

Our fingers flitted like
tongues, questioning
new ingredients,
palpating fabric,
aromas unfamiliar,
yet inviting.

I knew I wanted more.

Your breath nourished me,
steaming up my face like vapors
from an exotic stew
I couldn't get enough of.
I put each of your fingers
one at a time
in my mouth,
and swirled my tongue over callouses
as if I were trying to find the seeds
in a piece of fruit.

I crept to bed after six,
bemused that
I was going to sleep as
the birds were waking up.
