Maybe they can read minds, or just lips?
Anything to avoid them knowing she's afraid.

She's had hours to think about this moment,
and to ruminate over it in her mind,
again and again and again....

Bread and gallon of milk onto the conveyor belt.
When she smiles weakly at the cashier and falters,
she's sure she's making a fool of herself.
Just like always.
