She asks if I’m a singer
I laugh and say no
She asks if I always talk like that
I laugh and say yes
What is she asking this for
She laughs and says I have the best voice
For phone sex
I stop laughing
So does she
She doesn’t know I’ve never done that, and
It’s not the first time I’ve been embarrassed
By that voice
That I articulate
That I enunciate
That I pay attention to how I speak
Yet am embarrassed by that voice
So surprised
When I hear that catch of breath
On the other end of the line
From a friend
A client
The man taking my order for sushi
Even my mother has made note
That I leave a message and sound like I’m twelve
And overzealous
But when I’m live on the phone
Well, that’s another story
I don’t try for sultry
I don’t shoot for sexy
I don’t even want to turn you on
But it’s not the first time I’ve been embarrassed
By that voice

Needs some work, but it's good stuff. I like when a poet shares something interesting and real.
