"the ancient connection"

as he stands beneath the nebulous streetlight
he seizes me in his epicanthic fold
and i can see dynasties of ming wisdom
in the slants
i cross the street like peter lorre
and nod coldly
broken english is spoken
as we slide around the corner
into the shadows of the redbrick alley...
this is a cultural exchange.

with little further waste of time
i slip him my hard-earned american cash
and he hands me the chinese laundry
later alone in the apartment and
beneath the halo of the naked bulb
i devour the sacred script
then i sit in a chair at the table
i decide to extinguish the light
and contemplate the endless dawn that rises...
wide-eyed and glued to the ancient connection.
