The Battle

There are rockets that scream in the sky
There are soldiers sobbing as they die
Over the sound of a machine gun’s rattle
It has just started, this madness of battle

As the tears of fear cover my face
My survival has become a terrifying race
I must step over those fallen friends
My being, on fighting, now depends

And no one can answer the reason why
If we are to live then others must die
Why so many young will never grow old
With their stories of life so quickly told

With reasoning from hell a war they wage
And it seems eternally this battle will rage
But if a soldier is to live then he must kill
Then forever ask why once the battle is still
