In a shabby cap with a nicked up bat and used-up old baseball

The scrawny lad tried to look real bad as he tired to hit the ball.

He tossed it up into the air then grabbed and swung the bat.

He gave it a try but badly missed and that was simply that.

He felt bad he'd done that; but he was trying to have some fun.

He announced to the crowd that wasn't there, "That was just strike one!"

Then he crowed in a voice loud and clear, "Hey, folks! Look at me!"

"I'm the best darn hitter in the world; I'm the best you'll ever see!"

He picked the ball up off the ground and gave it another try.

But the bat fanned right by the ball--the lad just wanted to cry.

He knew the game of baseball, he knew what he had to do.

He bowed to crowd that wasn't there and called out "Stee-rike two!"

"But look over here, everyone. Look over here at me!"

"I'm the best hitter in the world, the best that'll ever be!"

One more cut, one more chance, one more pitch to try.

He'd drive that ball out of the park and say to it, "Good Bye".

He grabbed the ball from the dirt and threw it up once more.

He had to hit it this time to drive in the winning score.

He swung so hard to hit it he thought that he would bust;

He swung so hard he left his feet and fell into the dust.

He missed the ball so darn close but whiffed right by its cover.

No hits, no runs, no errors. Lights out! The game is over!

"This cannot be! It cannot be! Don't they know who i am?"

"The greatest hitter in the world, you know, that is who I am!"

He brushed the dust off his arms, slapped them them with his cap.

Sat there cross-legged on the field with the bat across his lap.

He eyed the crowd that wasn't there, saw their faceless faces.

He had to say something quick that would put them in their places.

He thought a bit, then stood up tall, and addressed the restless crowd

He knew he'd say something that would make them all feel proud.

"Look here, folks! Look at me! You got this show for free!"

"You'll never see the like again! I'm the best pitcher you'll ever see!"
