From the white heat, the light of noon,
The commotion of the street, we entered;
Hungry minds met by tall yawning columns of cool marble
Gilded inspirations,
Silver-framed feats of imagination.
And there,
Beyond tranquil rows of bended bodhisattvas,
Past colored cries of post-modern madness;
Waiting…
A thousand shades of violet and indigo and blue,
Soft mock moonlight illuminating facets of every hue;
And I,
Words evaporating from my lips
Stood long before it
A glutton.
In dazzling states of daze,
All the rest ingested;
Stark, shadowy stills
Dissolving into pharaoh-lined Lalique,
Absorbed by gigantic geometrics
Until at last, we could have no more.
Then out into the dusted-rose dusk,
The calm that was the evening, we exited;
Eyes seared and minds digesting,
The day I saw Monet…
