My walks in the dark green forest
Always brought me alive
With the smell of thick moss in summer
Or frost in autumn time
The beauty was so breathtaking
It made me want to cry
I remember the feel of cool water from the lake
And the sound of a robin’s lullaby
Each time I walked through the forest
New things appeared to me
For I’d stumbled across a litter of rabbits
Or found new flowers by my tree
Now looking back over the years
I thank God for all that I’ve seen
Yet I do regret that I’ve lost my sight
For things never stay as the seemed
You see I went back to the forest
And everything was gone
No flowers, no moss or freshness
Not even the robin’s song
I guess I saw through the eyes of a child
Or dreamed childish dreams
Or else old age has darkened
What once were bright happy scenes
